Maximizing Software Assets in the Cloud

The Cloud has been playing a huge role in reshaping Software Asset Management (SAM) over the years. The industry is currently at a turning point in software licensing because of the enormous impact of Cloud Computing on how software is purchased, delivered and deployed, which is quickly transforming the entire IT space. Software companies are increasingly moving towards subscription and service models for pricing and licensing of solutions based on customer demand for cloud consumption due to apparent benefits and conveniences.

Quite a handful of challenges have been uncovered due to this shift, which is forcing businesses to realign their models and processes to compete and profit from the new Cloud economy. Although it may seem simple to handle, an environment that is powered primarily by Cloud services and Software as a Service (SaaS) platforms may actually take more time and effort to manage since it is hosted off-premise.

SaaS vendors offer their solutions to customers in different ways. Most SaaS applications, however, are run through web browsers, which means that no binary downloads or client-side installations are required. In this case, customers are given a username and password to access a web page. The actual software runs on the server end, and users access it remotely using a web browser or portal. With this delivery model, the challenge for SAM solution providers is to find creative ways of metering the usage of Cloud applications.

In response to this challenge, Open iT introduces a new feature for tracking the usage of web apps in Open iT® LicenseAnalyzer2020. LicenseAnalyzer2020 collects data, which are then processed, filtered, and normalized in the Open iT Core Server to be able to create useful reports, which include the following:

  1. Web Application Usage

    • Report by count of web visits (count)
    • Report by duration of web visits (running time)
    • Report by number of users (distinct)
    • Report by concurrent instances
  2. Distinct User per Application

    • Report by Application Name
    • Report by Daily Trend
  3. Visit Count per Application

    • Report per Weekly Trend
    • Report per Application Name
    • Report per User Level
  4. Real-Time Dashboards

    The Web App Tracker Dashboard reports the top applications per measurement. This information can be filtered by specific resolution, application, and web browser. The Dashboard can also be easily integrated on available BI tools.

With these reports, management can optimize web apps usage by:

  • Metering how often and for how long web apps are being used daily by each user;
  • Knowing which domains are frequently visited by users;
  • Having an easy overview of the internal usage of web applications;
  • Providing concise and valuable information by filtering and mapping web domains to application name;
  • Comparing application usage through dynamic reports; and
  • Knowing the applications that are most frequently used by each user.

Today’s licensing models can be very complex, and they will continue to grow in complexity. A SAM solution that simplifies this growing complexity becomes imperative in order to take full control and maximize the value of the organization’s expensive software assets.
