What is DUG Insight License Manager #
DUG Insight is a seismic processing, imaging and interpretation platform from DUG Technology Ltd, headquartered in West Perth, Australia. Geoscientists use DUG Insight software to pick horizons and faults, tie wells to seismic data and run time-depth conversion. It runs on Windows, Linux and macOS.
DUG Insight License Manager is how DUG controls who can run it. You’ll deal with three parts:
- A license token, which DUG emails after a purchase or a trial request.
- The Licence Manager inside Insight (Help menu, then Licence Manager). It activates the token and lists each license’s type, expiry date and modules.
- DUG’s licensing server at license.dug.com. At activation, Insight turns details of the computer into a unique key and registers it with the license there.
The server is DUG’s, not yours. Insight reaches it the way a web browser does, on port 80 or 8080. If a firewall or proxy blocks that traffic, users can’t register a token or use a floating license. The DUG Insight user manual covers activation, proxy and firewall settings. DUG Insight support handles the rest.
Which license types does DUG Insight support #
DUG’s Software Evaluation and Licence Agreement (SELA) defines three license types.
| Tipo de licença | Who can use it | Where it can run | Internet needed |
|---|---|---|---|
| Node-locked | One designated computer | Not on systems with multiple remote logins, such as Citrix or VNC | Only to activate |
| Flutuante | Any employee, one concurrent user per license | Country of purchase; temporary use while travelling is allowed | To activate and to use |
| Global floating | Any direct employee, one concurrent user per license | Anywhere; required for third-party cloud such as AWS or Azure | To activate and to use |
You pay in one of two ways. A Fixed Term Lease is a subscription with updates and support, and it renews automatically. A Capital license is perpetual, and updates and support need an annual maintenance plan.
One counting rule matters more than the rest. DUG’s manual says: “Every instance of Insight consumes a floating license.” A geophysicist who opens two projects in two Insight windows holds two licenses. You’re counting instances, not people.
Which DUG applications use the DUG Insight License Manager #
Only DUG’s. The DUG Insight documentation and DUG’s license agreement describe this license manager for DUG software alone, and we found no other vendor using it. It covers DUG Insight and these DUG Insight modules:
- Processing and Imaging
- Explorationist
- Gather Attributes
- Pore Pressure Prediction
- Rock
- Lithofluids
- Petrel Link, for working with Petrel data inside Insight
- Kingdom Reader, for opening IHS Kingdom projects
DUG’s license portal shows which users are running which modules on which computers. That’s a live view. A renewal question needs months of it.
How Open iT supports your work with DUG Insight License Manager #
Two numbers decide a DUG Insight renewal: the floating licenses on your lease and your peak concurrent use. DUG’s invoice gives you the first. Open iT LicenseAnalyzer™ gives you the second.
How the data gets collected #
Open iT’s collector asks DUG’s license portal what’s in use. Each night it sends the results to the Open iT server, which stores them for reporting. If your company has more than one DUG account, Open iT tracks each one separately.
What you can report on #
You get license use by user and computer, hourly usage, concurrent users over time, usage by user group, and total use. That’s enough to answer what a renewal asks. What was our highest concurrent use last quarter, against the licenses we lease? Which teams use DUG Insight, and how much? Who keeps a second instance open?
Keep the record for one more reason. DUG’s license agreement lets DUG audit your compliance on reasonable notice, and non-compliance can mean immediate termination and penalties. You’ll want your own numbers if that notice comes.
What your IT team needs #
- An Open iT Core Client connected to an Open iT Core Server
- LicenseAnalyzer collection switched on
- A non-SSO DUG account with administrator access to the DUG portal
- Your DUG license token
The DUG Insight configuration guide has the setup steps. DUG Insight License Manager (Floating License) is on the list of license managers Open iT supports.
Perguntas frequentes #
What is DUG Insight License Manager?
It’s DUG Technology’s built-in licensing system for DUG Insight. You activate a license with a token, and DUG registers it on its licensing server. The Licence Manager inside Insight shows each license’s type, expiry date and modules.
What license types does DUG Insight offer?
Node-locked, floating and global floating. Commercial licenses come as a Fixed Term Lease or a perpetual Capital license. DUG also offers a 30-day evaluation license and academic licenses for non-commercial use.
Does opening two DUG Insight projects use two licenses?
Yes, if they run in two instances. DUG states that every instance of Insight consumes a floating license, so one person with two Insight windows open holds two licenses.
Can Open iT track DUG Insight floating license usage?
Yes, from Open iT version 10.2.580. LicenseAnalyzer polls DUG’s license portal through its API every hour and keeps the history for reports on users, computers, concurrency and user groups.
