Autodesk Cloud

Principales conclusiones
  • Open iT supports the collection of Autodesk Named User Subscription (NUS) and Flex usage data across the Autodesk products available to the organization.
  • Autodesk’s own product line now spans well past desktop CAD into Autodesk Construction Cloud, BIM 360, and Autodesk Build.
  • Checkout counts and token balances only answer whether the pool is big enough. Seeing whether it’s being used well is the move from Level 1 (Runtime Usage) to Level 2 (True Active Usage).

Autodesk Cloud is Open iT's configuration for tracking Autodesk licensing – who can open the software, and how many seats are in use. It covers more than 5,500 tracked application records: named-user subscriptions and Flex token consumption through the Autodesk Admin Portal. Legacy on-premises network/concurrent licensing (Autodesk Network License Manager) is separate, covered below. Autodesk's own portfolio has grown well past desktop CAD, into Construction Cloud, BIM 360, and Build. Checkout counts still don't tell you whether anyone's using the seat.

What is the Autodesk license manager? #

“Autodesk license manager” is the umbrella term IT and engineering teams use for whichever mechanism controls access to a given Autodesk product. That mechanism has shifted over the past several years, away from a single on-premises concurrent pool, toward named-user subscriptions and Flex, a token-based consumption model.

Autodesk’s product line has broadened alongside that shift. Desktop CAD (AutoCAD, Inventor) now sits next to Autodesk Construction Cloud – the platform that today houses BIM 360, Autodesk Build, Autodesk Docs, and Autodesk Drive, all administered through the same Autodesk account system as the desktop licenses. That matters here because of a naming collision: Open iT’s own configuration for collecting Autodesk data is also called Autodesk Cloud, a data-collection label, not a product, and not the same thing as Autodesk’s Construction Cloud platform. One is a licensing/entitlement layer. The other is a project-collaboration platform. Both terms show up in search under similar phrasing, so keep them apart.

License types Autodesk supports #

License typeCómo funcionaWhere it’s tracked
Named-user subscriptionOne entitlement per person, managed in the Autodesk Admin Portal, with sign-in allowed on multiple devices under Autodesk’s single-user termsAutodesk Admin Portal
Network / concurrent (legacy)A shared pool of seats on an on-premises license server, first-come, first-served until the pool is exhaustedAutodesk Network License Manager (FlexNet-based)
Flex tokensA shared token balance consumed per session or per product, instead of a dedicated named seatAutodesk Admin Portal

Each Autodesk licensing model handles access differently. Named-user subscriptions rely on product assignments to individual users. Legacy network/concurrent licensing draws from a shared pool, where a user may be unable to obtain a license when all available seats are in use. Flex uses a token-based model, where access and consumption depend on product eligibility, user assignment, and available tokens.

Autodesk applications on this license manager #

AutoCAD, Inventor, Vault Professional, Moldflow, and Fusion 360 most commonly run under Autodesk’s named-user and Flex licensing.

Most enterprise Autodesk accounts today carry more than desktop CAD, though. The same Autodesk Admin Portal account that issues those seats typically also covers Autodesk Construction Cloud, BIM 360, Autodesk Build, Autodesk Docs, and Autodesk Drive, since Autodesk consolidated much of its AEC portfolio under one subscription and one admin console.

Autodesk license manager metering and management #

There are two key questions about the same license pool, and they don’t have the same answer. “Is the pool big enough?” Checkouts, seat assignments, and token balances at the entitlement layer answer that. Those are the same numbers Autodesk’s own tools, and most basic monitoring, already show. “Is the pool being used well?” That comes down to what’s happening on the machine holding the seat: active in the application, or assigned and idle while someone else is denied.

Those two questions matter regardless of license type. A denial on a concurrent pool and a token balance running low on Flex are the same underlying problem wearing two different licensing mechanics: too little visibility into actual use.

How Open iT helps you monitor and manage the Autodesk licenses #

Open iT tracks Autodesk under the Autodesk Cloud configuration in its Level 1 license manager catalog, which collects data “from the Autodesk portal for Named User Subscription and Flex.” An IT team assigns named users to products and manages Flex token balances in that same Autodesk Admin Portal.

Five named data types come out of that collection, used for historical reporting: License Token Individual Usage, License Token Total Usage, License Subscription Inventory v2.0, License Product Assignment v2.0, and License Seat Usage. One sample report built from this data, Named User License Assignment per User, shows this configuration tracks named-user assignments.

Level 1 data answers the “is the pool big enough” question above: who’s assigned what, and how much of the token balance is in use – licensing, assignment, and usage information, all pulled once a day from the Autodesk portal itself. Getting to the “is it used well” question means adding what that portal can’t see: real activity on the machine holding the seat. That’s the move from Level 1 to Level 2 (True Active Usage) – correlating the daily snapshot against actual keyboard, mouse, and application activity, so a token draw or an assigned seat isn’t mistaken for someone actually using the software.

See real Autodesk seat utilization, not just checkout counts #

Legacy on-premises network licensing runs on the Autodesk Network License Manager, available through Autodesk’s own account/admin portal. Named-user and Flex licensing skip the download entirely, since the Autodesk Admin Portal assigns and manages entitlement directly.

A named-user assignment tells you a license is allocated to that person. A Flex token draw tells you tokens are being consumed. Neither tells you whether the person is opening the software right now: a named-user seat can sit unused, and a Flex token balance can drain on sessions nobody’s running. That gap is where Open iT’s Level 2 data earns its keep – before assuming the account needs more named-user seats or a bigger Flex allocation, see what’s happening on the machine behind that assignment or that token draw.
