Reservoir Engineering

When reservoir licenses are billed on usage, your data is the invoice.

Open iT meters true usage of tNavigator, RMS, OFM, and Techlog, so you can right-size seats, protect long simulation runs, and control pay-per-use agreements.

  • Tell a running solve from an abandoned modeling seat
  • Harvest idle RMS and Petrel seats with the right method for each
  • Enter pay-per-use renewals with the usage record that sets the bill

A reservoir seat can run a solve for two days or sit abandoned for two days. To the license server, both look identical.

Reservoir engineering mixes two very different usage patterns on the same expensive licenses. A tNavigator simulation is checked out and legitimately held for hours or days while it solves. An RMS or Petrel modeling seat is checked out, then left open through meetings and overnight. A license server cannot tell the productive hold from the idle one, so you renew both at full price.

The stakes are rising because the vendors are moving to pay-per-use. When your agreement bills on actual usage, your metering is no longer just evidence for a negotiation. It is the number on the invoice. Maersk Oil, now part of TotalEnergies, made exactly this move with Schlumberger and cut one of its most expensive applications by 39 percent.

Pay-Per-Use Readiness Calculator

When a vendor bills on actual usage, idle time is money. See how ready you are for a usage-based agreement and what stopping idle sessions could save.

1. How ready are you?

Answer above

Tick what is true today.

2. What could stopping idle time save?

Elapsed time billed while sessions sat idle. Open iT measures this.

Automated suspend or terminate does not catch every second. Conservative factor you control.

Maersk Oil, now TotalEnergies, moved to a usage-based Schlumberger agreement, used Level 3 to stop inactive sessions, and cut one of its most expensive applications by 39 percent. Publicly presented at conferences and webinars.

How this is calculated

Billed while idle = current usage-based spend × inactive share. Reduction = billed while idle × the share you could stop. The readiness score counts how many conditions are true; more true conditions mean a usage-based model favors you more, because you can measure and cut the time that drives the bill.

All rates are your inputs, not Open iT claims. Your real inactive elapsed time is measured once Open iT is connected.

For planning discussion only. Actual reduction depends on measured usage, contract terms, and the harvesting method each application supports (for example, RMS supports terminate only, while Petrel and Landmark support suspend and resume).

These figures use your inputs. Open iT reads your license servers and reports your real inactive elapsed time, so you enter a usage-based agreement with eyes open. Get your free utilization snapshot.

Questions fréquemment posées

Will harvesting kill a running simulation?

No. A live solve is active usage and is never suspended or terminated. Only idle, held seats are targeted.

Can Open iT harvest RMS?

Yes, using the warn and terminate method, because RMS from Emerson does not support suspend and resume. Petrel and Landmark tools use suspend and resume with an autosave step.

Does this help with pay-per-use agreements?

Yes. Elapsed-time and usage reporting per application lets you see and reduce the usage that drives a usage-based invoice.

Which reservoir applications are supported?

tNavigator, Techlog, and OFM are confirmed, and RMS is metered as Sentinel RMS. Petrel is widely deployed for optimization.

A two-day solve and a two-day-abandoned seat cost you the same today. Open iT tells them apart, applies the right method to each tool, and hands you the usage record that now sets your bill.
