What is the difference between Base Professional and Base Enterprise?

Open iT Base Professional and Base Enterprise are the two editions of Open iT Software Suite. Open iT Base Professional includes the Open iT Base, Core Server and Reporting Server. Open iT Base Enterprise includes all of the components of Base Professional plus the Analysis Server. The Analysis Server is an enterprise-grade, SQL-based analytical tool, which is aimed at high-end users and organizations with complex reporting and analytical needs.

What are the license managers supported by Open iT?

Open iT currently supports 26 different license managers (LMs), including:

Aladdin Hardlock (NetHASP), Altair License Manager, Animator, Bentley SELECT* (on local servers), Beta LM, ClearCase, Dassault Systemes License Server (DSLS), Elan/Abaqus, EOD (Exceed onDemand), Enterprise Architect License Manager, FlexNet/FLEXlm, Green Hills License Manager (GHSlm), HQMS, IBM-LUM, LM-X, LS-DYNA, MathLM, Sentinel HASP (NetHASP), Parasoft License Server, Peloton, Reprise License Manager (RLM), Sentinel RMS, SlickEdit, SmartPlant, STI License Manager, Vector.

Open iT is constantly adding support for more license managers based on customer requests. In addition, Open iT offers support for any new LM within 3 months, for an additional charge.

Can Open iT track license denials?

Yes. Furthermore, the advanced denial reporting capabilities of Open iT can eliminate temporary denials and distinguish True and False Denials. A “true” denial occurs when a user is denied a license from every license server from which the user had tried to check out a license. On the other hand, a “false” denial occurs when a user is denied a license at the first request, but then receives a license from another independent license server.

Can Open iT monitor license usage according to company projects?

Yes. Open iT has the ability to accurately map usage to company projects using the ID Mapping feature. It works by displaying a graphical user interface (GUI) whenever the user starts an application. This feature provides the ability for the user to record a particular instance of usage of an application to a project.

What are the default port server of Open iT?

The default port numbers for the Open iT Server and the MessageCentral are 7478 and 7483 respectively. This can be changed to any port number that is not already in use.

What database is used in Open iT?

Open iT Software Suite is packaged in two different editions which uses different database: Open iT Base Professional and Open iT Base Enterprise.

Open iT Base Professional includes the Open iT Base, Core Server and Reporting Server which uses a proprietary database. Open iT Base Enterprise includes all of the components of Base Professional plus the Analysis Server which uses MS SQL and Analysis Services.

Base Enterprise is an enterprise-grade tool, aimed at high-end users and organizations with complex reporting and analytical needs.

Where do you install Open iT?

The data collectors can be installed on any machine: servers (license servers, application servers) and workstations. For the Open iT Server, we recommend installing it on a dedicate machine.

What licensing models does Open iT have/support?

Open iT supports the most popular licensing models including, but not limited to, concurrent (floating) licenses, standalone licenses, user named licenses, host based licenses, node-locked, dongle licenses many more.

Does Open iT License automatically notify before licenses expire? 

Yes. Proactive alerts can be configured to send e-mail before licenses expire. In addition to email alerts, license expiration warnings are also displayed in the real-time License Monitor Portal.

What is a Datatype and why are there so many?

Basically, Open iT splits the raw data to multiple datatypes so that the reporting will be faster. A datatype contains preprocessed data so that when you request data from the Open iT server, you only need to do simple extraction/calculations.

For example, if the focus of the reporting is the overall or total usage, we have designed a Total Usage datatype to focus on aggregated values (summary, average usage, etc). Another example of data type called Individual Use. It is used for more detailed, user-level reporting.

Does your solution support multiple currencies?

Yes, the Open iT solution supports all worldwide currencies.

Does your solution support SAP licensing? 

Yes, Open iT offers the Optimizer for SAP® Licensing – a powerful and complete solution to effectively control an organization’s SAP license usage and efficiently manage SAP licensing costs.

Does your SAM tool support license optimization for all major vendors?

Yes. Open iT support license optimization for all major vendors. Additionally, we offer vendor specific solutions such as the Open iT Optimizer for SAP Licensing and ELP (Effective License Positioning) for Business Apps (Microsoft, IBM) and many more.

Does your tool support licenses on virtual environments?

Yes, Open iT provides visibility of licenses even on virtual environments such as Hyper-V, VMWare, Virtual Box and Citrix virtualization technologies.

Does the solution provide both software and hardware asset management?

Yes, Open iT provides both software and hardware asset management. Open iT can provide gap solutions for more extensive hardware asset management.

What is the source of data point?

Open iT has over 17 years of experience in metering applications and utilizes our TRUEUse™ Technology to not just parse log files but to utilize data collection and analysis from multiple sources to provide the most comprehensive and accurate usage reporting on the market.

How is the performance of Open iT? Is there any estimated performance data for Open iT?

Open iT data collectors are very small and has very minimal overhead in the customer’s environment. Data collection is designed in a way that will not interrupt busy enterprise environment. Performance for the reporting varies depending on the number of license servers, applications and users monitored.

What is the optimal hardware and software specification for Open iT?

The optimal H/W specifications for Open iT will vary depending on the scale of the environment, specifically, the number of distinct users that will be monitored.

Do you offer both cloud/SaaS and on-premise solutions for your application?

Yes, Open iT offers both cloud/SaaS (Managed Service) and On-premise solutions.

Can you drill down into more detail per data point?

Yes, Open iT reports can be drilled down to navigate hierarchically organized data.

What is the granularity of events?

Open iT reports can be viewed at hourly, daily, weekly, monthly, quarterly and yearly granular levels.

How does the tool report changes over time?

Open iT retains license information as well as usage information by user parameters based upon designation at the time of metering.

Can Open iT send alerts/warnings to specific individuals or groups when defined conditions occur?   

Yes. Open iT supports proactive alarms on different license events such as stoppage of a license server, license expiration, and exceeding license usage thresholds. You can configure the threshold of your alerts based on your requirements. For example, your administrator may want to receive an e-mail if your licenses have reached 90% utilization. The administrator can just set up an alert for 90% Max Utilization and configure it to send it to his e-mail, instead of constantly monitoring the dashboards.

What is the method of alerting in Open iT? (Email, Web App, Text, Pop up alert on Client Computer)

Method of alerting is through e-mail. Alerts/Warning are also displayed on the web interface (License Monitor Portal and Dashboard) such as license expiry and license daemon status.

Can Open iT show the current license usage in real-time?

Yes, the Open iT solution includes a centralized web interface called the License Monitor for viewing real-time usage of all applications for all license servers.

What is the interval time of refresh for the real-time license monitoring?

The default interval time is 5 minutes.

Open iT can support several license server but what if new license server comes out?

Open iT is constantly adding support for more license managers based on customer requests. In addition, Open iT offers support for any new license manager within 3 months, for an additional charge.

What internet browsers are supported?

Open iT supports all web browsers from any major vendors such as Internet Explorer, Google Chrome and Mozilla Firefox.

Does Open iT have the ability to change the display name of a feature to a business meaningful name?

Yes. Open iT has several Renaming and Mapping capabilities such as Feature Renaming and Feature-to-Featureset mapping.

Open iT has a very advanced algorithm for matching from individual features to feature-sets (or products as they appear in the vendors pricebook). Open iT is ahead of its competitors in this area. Our customers often say that they were only able to achieve accurate feature mapping with Open iT.

Can you customize reports and dashboards in Open iT?

Yes. Open iT has the most flexible reporting capabilities allowing users to present reports in multiple ways.

Can Open iT support LDAP protocol, including Microsoft Active Directory?

Open iT provides an interface for connecting to LDAP or Active Directory, in order to download additional information about the users, such as Full Name, Business Unit, Location, Cost Center, etc. and integrate the information in the reporting.

Does your app support role based authorization?

Yes, we support role based authentication on users under the Active Directory. Additionally, we can also create more comprehensive role-based access to data and system functions by creating roles in the administration feature of the web-based interface.

Describe your version upgrade and patching scheduling. Can we skip one or more major version releases?

Yes, a customer can choose to skip major versions. Every version update has unique features added, and these features often come from customer requests. Open iT may suggest which update would be the most appropriate version in the company’s working environment, but the customer still has the full authority to choose whether to install a new version or not, as long as the current version is still supported.

Does your solution support SAP licensing? If yes, please elaborate on the solution e.g. how you aggregate and report on results, optimize and adjust licenses, etc.

Yes. Open iT offers the Optimizer for SAP® Licensing – a powerful and complete solution to effectively control an organization’s SAP license usage and efficiently manage SAP licensing costs.

SAP licenses are optimized based on the actual usage performed by SAP users. Our solution matches usage criteria to the license types purchased by the customer, calculates the necessary license for each user, then consolidates the users from different systems to distinct named employees.

Furthermore, our solution also finds dormant, duplicate, and low-active user accounts in each application-level so that these accounts can be eliminated and their licenses freed. Last but not least, the solution tracks on software-engine values.

If you support SAP licensing, is there a need for configuration/coding in SAP? What is required?

Open iT installs an agentless collector, which communicates with the SAP instances through the standard API RFC. This agent is external to the SAP system and does not require any special configuration or coding within SAP. Most clients regard this as a major benefit of our Optimer for SAP® Licensing solution compared to our competitors.
